King Street Unit Block Pedestrian Zone Open Through Labor Day, Feedback Sought
The City of Alexandria is seeking feedback on the future of the pedestrian zone in the King Street unit block and part of the Strand.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — With the pilot program of a pedestrian zone set to end Labor Day weekend in the unit block of King Street and the Strand, the City of Alexandria is seeking feedback.
The unit block of King Street between Union Street and the Strand and the northern part of the Strand between Wales Alley and King Street have been converted to a pedestrian-only zone from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The pedestrian zone provides space for people to walk, bike and scooter, as well as space for dining or retail. The road has been closed to all vehicles with the exception of emergency and municipal maintenance vehicles.
City Council had approved the pilot program on April 23. According to the city, the pilot program was introduced due to the success of the 100 block pedestrian zone success, increased activity near the waterfront and requests from businesses. The 100 block pedestrian zone was closed to vehicles in May 2020, and City Council voted to make the closure permanent in October 2021.

Now city staff will collect public input and assess the next steps for the King Street unit block and the Strand pedestrian zone. A survey open through Sept. 13 asks respondents if they'd like to see the pedestrian zone be permanent, if they positive or negative experiences with the pedestrian zone and what they'd like added to a permanent pedestrian zone.
