Gun Brought To Alexandria Elementary School Accidentally: Police

Alexandria Police believe a student accidentally brought a relative's backpack that contained a gun to an elementary school.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — After a student was found with a gun an at Alexandria elementary school Friday, Alexandria Police say the incident at Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy is believed to be accidental.

Alexandria Police had responded to Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy and confiscated the gun, found in a student's backpack. According to police, student did not know the backpack contained a gun when it went to school. The student accidentally took the wrong backpack, which contained a relative's legally-owned handgun.

Police say the student told a teacher, who took the bag and notified school administrators.

"The child did the right thing, not touching the gun and approaching a responsible adult about it," police said in a news release.

No other student was believed to have seen the gun. There has been no evidence to suggest the student threatened others.

The student's family is cooperating with police, and a relative has said the gun belongs to them.

The investigation into the incident continues. Police are consulting with the Alexandria Commonwealth's Attorney's office to determine if charges will be placed.

In light of the incident, a nonprofit formed in response to the school shooting that killed 19 students and two teachers in Ulvalde, Texas offered to provide clear backpacks to the school. The Uvalde Foundation For Kids said a clear backpack policy for students would help prevent weapons from being brought to school.
