Gun Found In Student's Bag At Alexandria Elementary School: Police

Alexandria Police confiscated a gun that was found in a student's book bag on Friday. No threat was made at the school, police say.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria Police say a student had a gun in their bag Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy, an elementary school for kindergarten through fifth grade.

Alexandria Police responded to the school around 11:41 a.m. Friday as school officials learned a student's book bag contained a gun. According to police, the student told a teacher about a gun in the book bag. The teacher immediately took the gun and notified school administrators and police.

Police confiscated the gun and say there was no threat made to the school. Police do not believe other children were aware of the gun.

The student's parents were notified and are cooperating with police. A relative said the gun belonged to them.

Mayor Justin Wilson shared a response to the incident on social media.

"I cannot possibly imagine a more damning indictment of our policy failure on guns than a weapon in the hands of an elementary student. We must do better," the mayor tweeted.

Police continue to investigate.
