La Bergerie To Hold Liquidation Sale

The owners had previously announced La Bergerie couldn't reopen due to costs from a lawsuit.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Following the announcement that French restaurant La Bergerie would not reopen, the owners are holding a liquidation sale this weekend. It will be held along with the estate sale at Patsy and Jack Ticer's home, 512 Prince Street, Alexandria.

The sale is planned for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday. La Bergerie furniture, chandeliers and artwork will be available.

Owners Laurent and Margaret Ticer Janowsky announced in June the restaurant wouldn't reopen due to costs from a lawsuit. They had been planning to reopen the restaurant in a Federal-style historic building at 329 North Washington Street.

In 2014, they signed a contract to move the restaurant and a five-room inn upstairs. City Council approved their plans in the fall, but 23 residents sued the city over the project's approval one month later.

An approximately two-year lawsuit ensued. As the case went on, La Bergerie's lease at the historic Crilley Warehouse (218 North Lee Street) expired. That location closed in late 2016 after 40 years in business. An Indian restaurant called Tandoori Nights was approved in March to open at the Crilley Warehouse location.

Although the city won the lawsuit in 2016 and residents lost appeals, the Janowskys said they lost investors and $400,000 in personal investments over the span of the legal battle. The Janowskys' other restaurant Del Ray Cafe continues to serve La Bergerie's dessert soufflés to its menu.
