Major Metro Track Work To Impact Alexandria In August

Single tracking and Blue Line service to limited stations will cause delays in August.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Alexandria riders should expect additional commuting pains during upcoming track work around the Metro system. Crews will conduct around-the-clock work on the Blue, Orange and Silver Lines from Aug. 11-26.

Over the 16 days, Metro workers are rebuilding track infrastructure between the McPherson Square and Smithsonian Metrorail stations. As a result Range and Silver Line trains will single track between McPherson Square and Smithsonian. Blue Line trains will only run between Franconia-Springfield and Arlington Cemetery.

In addition, Farragut West, McPherson Square and the lower level platform (Blue, Orange, and Silver lines) at Metro Center will close for weekend work the weekends of Aug. 11-12 and 25-26.

Metro expects heavy crowding on Orange and Silver Line trains and recommends only using Orange/Blue and Silver Line " if you have no other option." Silver Line trains will operate between Wiehle-Reston East and Largo Town Center every 20 minutes, Orange Line trains between Vienna and New Carrollton every 20 minutes and Blue Line trains between Franconia-Springfield and Arlington Cemetery every 16 minutes during rush hour, 12 minutes midday and evenings and every 20 minutes after 10 p.m.

Alexandria riders are encouraged to use the Yellow Line to get to downtown DC. Metro recommends getting off at Red, Yellow or Green Line stations close to your destinations to avoid the Blue, Orange and Silver Line delays. Other alternatives are taking the Virginia Railway Express Fredericksburg Line from Franconia-Springfield or Alexandria to Crystal City, L’Enfant Plaza (Metro Yellow Line stations) or Union Station (Red Line).
