Man Sentenced In Crash That Killed His Brother In Alexandria

A man will serve prison time for the crash that killed his brother. Police say he was drunk and driving 70 mph on a local street.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—A man has been sentenced for the July 2017 drunk driving crash that killed his brother and seriously injured his brother's fiancé in Old Town Alexandria.

Simon Urbina Vasquez, 27, of Fairfax County, was sentenced on two counts of aggravated vehicular manslaughter-driving under the influence (DUI) related and DUI. He will serve three years and four months in prison after parts of the sentence were suspended. His driving privileges are revoked indefinitely, and he will be under probation for five years after released from prison.

Urbina Vasquez was arrested on the scene of the July 8, 2017 crash. Police say he was driving drunk and speeding at 70 mph when the car left the roadway and struck a tree and fence. The crash happened on southbound Henry Street just south of Duke Street. His blood alcohol level was measured at .17—more than twice the legal limit.

The driver's brother, Jose Wuilver Urbina-Vasquez, 24, of Silver Spring, Md., was pronounced dead on the scene due to blunt force trauma to his head. The female passenger suffered a fractured pelvis and spine, and witnesses provided aid until help arrived.

Urbina Vasquez is currently being held at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center until he is transfered to prison.
