Memorial Day 2019: What's Open, Closed In Alexandria
Some services will be closed for Memorial Day around Alexandria. Plus see things to do on the holiday.
ALEXANDRIA, VA—Memorial Day is the unofficial summer kickoff, but it's also a federal holiday to remember those who have died serving in the military. Some services normally open on Mondays will be closed on May 27 for the holiday.
City of Alexandria government offices and public schools will be closed, while transit, pools and recreation centers are open. City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on May 27.
State offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk's Office, Alexandria Circuit Court, Alexandria General District Court and the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (520 King Street) will be closed on Monday, May 27. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Office (2681 Mill Road) will also be closed on May 27.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Schools and administrative offices are closed on May 27.
Animal shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open on May 27 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. with adoptions and animal visiting hours beginning at noon.
DASH and King Street Trolley: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule. The free King Street Trolley will operate on a normal Monday schedule every 10 to 15 minutes between the King Street-Old Town Metro Station and the Potomac River Waterfront from 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m.
Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778 and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.
Health facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King Street), the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard Street) and the Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King Street) will be closed on May 27.
Historic sites and museums: The Lyceum will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and the Gadsby's Tavern Museum and Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. on May 27. All other Office of Historic Alexandria museums will be closed on May 27. Visit alexandriava.gov/Historic for more information.
Impound lot: The city's Impound Facility (5249 Eisenhower Avenue) will be closed on May 27.
Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches and the Alexandria Law Library (520 King Street) will be closed on May 27.
Metrorail: Metro's summer shutdown of six Yellow and Blue stations south of Reagan National Airport will begin on May 25. Shuttle buses are available every 10 to 15 minutes at the impacted stations. Elsewhere, Metrorail will run on a Sunday schedule on May 27 from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Off-peak fares will be in effect and parking will be free at Metro lots and garages.
Metrobus: Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule on May 27. Visit www.wmata.com for more details on specific routes.
Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions for metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with posted parking time limits on May 27. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on May 27.
Pools: Old Town and Warwick pools will be open from 10 a.m.-5:45 p.m. on May 27. Great Waves Waterpark will be open from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The Memorial Pool opening is delayed due to power outage damage.
Post offices: Closed on May 27.
Recreation and arts centers: The Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility will be open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m., the Charles Houston Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and the Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on May 27. All other recreation and arts centers will be closed on May 27.
Trash pickup: Residential refuse and recycling will not be collected on May 27. Collection services will be moved one day later during the week of May 27. The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Center (3224 Colvin Street) will also be closed on May 27.
