Memorial Day: What's Open And Closed In Alexandria

Here's a breakdown of what is open and closed on Memorial Day in Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- City of Alexandria government offices will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, as well as libraries and schools. But services like public transit and the animal shelter will operate, although on a different schedule.

Here are the openings/closings to be aware of on Memorial Day.

  • City offices – closed
  • Libraries – All library branches and the Alexandria Law Library (520 King St.) will be closed.
  • Animal shelter – The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open from noon to 5 p.m.
  • Health facilities – The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.), the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) and the Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3329 King St.) will be closed.
  • Trash pickup – Residential refuse and recycling will not be collected on May 29. Collection services will be moved one day later during the week of May 29.
  • Recycling – The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Center will be closed on May 29.
  • Historic sites – Three historic sites will be open: The Lyceum (from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum (both from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.).   • Emergency hotlines – Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.
  • Recreation and arts centers – Three centers will be open: Chinquapin Park Recreation Center from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Charles Houston Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Torpedo Factory Art Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All other recreation and arts centers will be closed.
  • Public Pools – The Old Town and Memorial outdoor pools will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • DASH Bus Transit – DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its normal schedule, every 10 to 15 minutes, between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River waterfront, from 10 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. For more information, visit www.dashbus.com.

  • Parking at public garages – Police will not enforce parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with posted parking time limits on Monday. It does not apply to permit parking in any location normally prohibited (parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.
  • Alexandria City Public Schools and Administrative Offices – closed
  • State offices and courts – The Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and Court Service Unit located in the Alexandria Courthouse at 520 King St. and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office at 2681 Mill Rd. will be closed.
  • Liquor stores – all Virginia ABC stores will close at 6 p.m.
