New Nursing Care Center Adjacent to Woodbine Proposed
Building would go up on land between Woodbine nursing home and cemetery.

A controversial three-story building project seems to be moving forward in the face of some neighborhood opposition, next to the Woodbine nursing home on King Street in Alexandria.
It’s unclear whether any changes have been made to the project since the neighborhood group voiced their opposition to it in September.
A hearing before the Planning Commission for the proposed business, Alexandria Memory Care, is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers, 301 King St., Room 2400. For those wishing to speak at the meeting, a form must be filled out ahead of time. (Click on link to access form.)

The new building is being proposed by Graham Adelman, president and owner of Cambridge Healthcare Management, based in Richmond, owner of Woodbine and nursing homes in Richmond, Charlottesville and Colonial Beach.
Adelman is asking the City to rezone the land and approve the building plan.

A neighborhood group has communicated its opposition several times to the project to the City, most recently in September. The group, Taylor Run Citizens Association (TRCA), is concerned about the size of the building and potential for additional traffic.
On Sept. 17, the TRCA Executive Committee voted without dissent to oppose
what was then (and still may be) the latest proposal for the Woodbine expansion.
In its Sept. 24 letter, they said:
In summary, we are expressing our strong opposition to the proposed re-zoning and proposed development on the application lot. The geometry of the lot itself is challenging for any development, not to mention construction of a 74,000 square foot commercial institutional building meant to accommodate 66 individuals plus staff. After analysis of four iterations of plans we have concluded that such a project cannot be undertaken without having a seriously negative impact on the neighboring residential community.
