ALEXANDRIA, VA — Swollen streams and tidal flooding approaching the foot of King Street aren't uncommon sights during rain events in Alexandria. But the July 23 storm was 30 times more intense than Alexandria's sewer system is designed to handle, according to the city government. The storm led to 2 to 3 inches falling within 30 minutes, creating the flash flooding impacts in areas not normally impacted by flooding.

The event was one of a handful in recent years that have caused significant flooding in the riverfront city. The last major flash flooding event on July 8, 2019 resulted in a disaster declaration for Alexandria and other parts of the region.
