The People's Drug Restaurant Opens In Alexandria

The name pays tribute to the iconic People's Drug Store started in Alexandria.

The People's Drug restaurant has opened in Alexandria, with an ode to the famous drug store founded in 1905.

The restaurant at 103 N. Alfred Street is a reimagined version of People's Drug Store, which served up food and refreshments at a soda fountain in classic American style. In place of sodas and hamburgers, the new restaurant offers gourmet sandwiches, locally-sourced bowls, cocktails, cold-pressed juice and superfoods. Menu items range from starters like parmesan truffle fries to a Cuban sandwich.

The restaurant is a project of Teddy Kim, known for Mason Social and the soon-to-open Chop Shop Taco, according to Eater DC. It's meant to have a general store, lunch counter feel with a modern feel also fitting for happy hours or brunch.

Founded in Alexandria, People's Drug Store had expanded to more than 800 stores along the East Coast at one point. It was bought out by competitors in the 1990s as lunch counters at pharmacies becamea thing of the past.
