Presidents' Day 2019: What's Open, Closed In Alexandria
While Alexandria has numerous events to celebrate George Washington's birthday, some services will be closed.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—In 2019, Presidents' Day falls on Monday, Feb. 18. Virginia recognizes the federal holiday as Washington's Birthday, given his roots in the state.
Perhaps no place celebrates the holiday better than Alexandria, where Washington regularly visited. On Feb. 18, the city will host the George Washington Birthday Parade and other events.
The holiday also means a number of closures and schedule changes around the city. Below are the openings and closures to know on Presidents' Day.

City of Alexandria offices: Closed on Feb. 18.
State offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, Alexandria Circuit Court, Alexandria General District Court and the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (520 King Street) will be closed on Monday, Feb. 18. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Office (2681 Mill Road) will also be closed on Feb. 18.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Schools and administrative offices are closed on Feb. 18.
Animal shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open on Monday, Feb. 18, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. with animal visiting hours beginning at noon.
DASH and King Street Trolley: On Feb. 18, DASH bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its regular schedule, running every 15 minutes from 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. between the King Street Metro Station and the waterfront. Due to the George Washington Birthday Parade on Monday, Feb. 18, both the Trolley and certain DASH bus routes around City Hall and lower King Street will be modified.
Emergency hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1-888-832-3858; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.
Health facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King Street), the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard Street) and the Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King Street) will be closed on Feb. 18.
Historic sites and museums: The Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. with free admission. The Friendship Firehouse Museum, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, and Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. with free admission. Impound lot: The City’s Impound Facility (5249 Eisenhower Avenue) will be closed on Feb. 18.
Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches and the Alexandria Law Library (520 King Street) will be closed on Feb. 18.
Metrorail: Metrorail will run on a Saturday schedule on Feb. 18 from 5 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Off-peak fares will be in effect and parking will be free at Metro lots and garages. On Feb. 16-18, Yellow Line trains will only run between Huntington and Reagan National Airport due to rail maintenance on the Yellow Line bridge between Pentagon and L'Enfant Plaza. Metrobus: Metrobus will operate on a Saturday and supplemental schedule on Feb. 18. Visit www.wmata.com for more details on specific routes.
Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions for metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Monday, Feb. 18. This suspension of enforcement, which applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, does not permit parking in any location where it is normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on Feb. 18.
Post offices: Closed on Feb. 18.
Recreation and arts centers: The Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility (3210 King Street) will be open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m.; the Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe Street) and the Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Avenue) will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; and the Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. All other City recreation and arts centers will be closed on Feb. 18.
Trash pickup: Residential refuse and recycling will not be collected on Monday, Feb. 18. Collection services will be delayed by one day the week of Feb. 18. The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Drop-off Center (3225 Colvin Street) will be closed on Monday, February 18.
