Prosthetic Arm Designed For Young Alexandria Violinist

Alexandria's Isabella Nicola was born without a left hand, but she is now learning to play violin thanks to a prosthetic bow arm.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- An Alexandria girl born without a hand aspired to be violin player. That became reality for Isabella Nicola when a group of George Mason University bioengineering students designed a prosthetic bow arm.

Isabella Nicola was born without a left hand and part of the forearm. The project started when the 10-year-old decided to learn to play the instrument last year.

Her music instructor had designed a prosthetic for her with hardware supplies, but he ended up contacting GMU to design a lighter version. The students used 3D printing to design an arm that holds a bow which they named VioArm.
