Resident, Dog Treated For Smoke Inhalation After Alexandria Fire

ALEXANDRIA, VA—A resident and dog were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in an Alexandria high rise Monday night.

Around 9:30 p.m., firefighters responded to smoke on the sixth floor of the building in the 2600 block of Park Center Drive. Crews located the blaze inside one unit and quickly extinguished it. The fire was contained to the unit, Alexandria Fire Department spokesperson Ray Evans told Patch in an email.

According to a tweet from the IAFF Local 2141 firefighters union, crews located a dog inside the unit. The dog was taken to an emergency veterinary facility to treat the smoke inhalation, while the unit's sole resident was taken to the hospital.

Fire marshals determined an aluminum pot on the stove igniting combustibles caused the fire. There was fire, heat and smoke damage estimated at $50,000, according to the Alexandria Fire Department.

Arlington and Fairfax County firefighters assisted with the response.
