ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Sears store at the Landmark Mall is preparing to close as the future of the mall redevelopment remains uncertain.

Closing sales have begun, according to an advertisement in the latest Alexandria Times print edition. The store is putting everything on sale, including home appliances, and is hiring temporary cashiers.

The Landmark Mall store is one of a few Sears locations left in Northern Virginia. Recent closures have included stores in Seven Corners and Manassas.

The Sears location had been part of discussions about the mall's long-awaited redevelopment, led by mall owner Howard Hughes Corporation. Landmark Mall's Macy's and other remaining stores closed in 2017, with the exception of Sears. In 2018, Howard Hughes Corporation appeared to reach a deal with Seritage Growth Properties, a real estate investment trust that owns the Sears store. City Council approved a master plan amendment in 2019 to advance redevelopment of the site.

News of restructuring at Howard Hughes Corporation brought doubt about whether it would be the one moving forward with redevelopment. Mayor Justin Wilson wrote in April the city and Howard Hughes Corporation were having discussions about possible public-private partnerships to "spur the development."

The Landmark Mall redevelopment website promises turning Landmark Mall into a "live-shop-dine urban village." Carpenter's Shelter is temporarily using the space as its new building is being built.

Patch reached out to Howard Hughes Corporation for comment on the redevelopment status. The company had no update on Landmark Mall's future for Alexandria Living Magazine in April.
