Seven-Day Coronavirus Case Average Near 1,300 In Virginia

A month ago, the seven-day new case average was around 800.

VIRGINIA — An additional 1,157 coronavirus cases were reported by the Virginia Department of Health on Wednesday, bringing the seven-day average of new cases to 1,297.

The seven-day case average had been increasing for over a week, but the new average is down from 1,324 on Tuesday. A month ago on Oct. 4, the average was 818.

The total number of cases per 100,000 people in the last 14 days is 200.3. The seven-day average of daily cases per 100,000 people is 15.2, compared to 9.6 daily cases per 100,000 people on Oct. 4.

While the southwest region's cases have been rising for a month, the northern region has started to see the case average increase near the end of October. By region, new cases on Wednesday include 378 in the southwest region (421.4 seven-day average), 293 in the northern region (314.3 seven-day average), 184 in the eastern region (202.6 seven-day average), 156 in the northwest region (165.1 seven-day average), 146 in the central region (194 seven-day average).

The statewide seven-day positive average is 5.7 percent as of Oct. 31, and 2,700,765 PCR tests have been completed to date. The northern region's average has increased since remaining in the 4-percent range during October. The latest seven-day average for the region is 5.6 percent. Other regional averages are 9 percent in the southwest region, 5.1 percent in the central region, 4.8 percent in the eastern region, and 3.7 percent in the northwest region.

Current statewide hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients stand at 1,041, 10 more than Monday. The seven-day average of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Virginia is 1,040.4. The current number includes 301 patients in the southwest region (seven-day average of 282.6), 233 in the northern region (seven-day average of 243.3), 198 in the central region (seven-day average of 203.7), 178 in the eastern region (seven-day average of 184), and 131 in the northwest region (seven-day average of 126.9).

The 1,041 statewide hospitalizations include 102 patients on ventilators and 231 in the intensive care units, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. As of Monday, ventilator use among all hospital patients stands at 27 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 74 percent occupancy. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

There were 11 new deaths reported on Wednesday. Numbers of deaths reported each day have fluctuated, because they don't necessarily reflect the dates reported on death certificates. The seven-day average of deaths by date reported is 8.7. VDH also keeps track of deaths by date on the death certificate as this data is confirmed.

  • Alexandria: 4,391 cases, 328 hospitalizations, 74 deaths; increase of 28 cases
  • Arlington County: 4,854 cases, 541 hospitalizations, 154 deaths; increase of 24 cases and one hospitalization
  • Fairfax County: 24,591 cases, 2,300 hospitalizations, 604 deaths; increase of 192 cases and 10 hospitalizations, one death removed
  • Fairfax City: 165 cases, 14 hospitalizations, eight deaths; no changes
  • Falls Church: 78 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; one case removed
  • Loudoun County: 8,143 cases, 493 hospitalizations, 132 deaths; increase of 95 cases and five hospitalizations
  • Manassas: 2,069 cases, 132 hospitalizations, 27 deaths; increase of four cases
  • Manassas Park: 662 cases, 58 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of two cases
  • Prince William County: 14,833 cases, 1,019 hospitalizations, 223 deaths; increase of 173 cases and four hospitalizations
  • Fredericksburg: 607 cases, 53 hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of seven cases
