Sheriff's Deputy Fired, Arrested After Trying To Smuggle Drugs Into Jail: Police

ALEXANDRIA, VA — An Alexandria sheriff’s deputy was immediately fired and arrested after trying to smuggle drugs into the Alexandria Adult Detention Center on Saturday evening, authorities said.

Amarachukwu W. Igwe, who joined the sheriff’s office in July of 2025, tried to smuggle the drugs to give them to an incarcerated person, according to authorities.

She was taken into custody before any drugs were delivered or reached the general population and was brought to the Arlington County Detention Facility and charged with delivery of drugs to prisoners, conspiracy to deliver drugs to prisoners, and drug possession, authorities said.

“I commend the diligent work of our Investigations, Professionalism & Oversight Section whose proactive efforts uncovered this criminal conduct before it could jeopardize the safety of our staff or the residents of the Detention Center,” Sheriff Sean Casey said in a news release.

“I have zero tolerance for actions that undermine the security of our facility and those who violate the public trust placed in them will face the full consequences of their actions.”

The case remains under investigation, according to authorities.
