Speed Enforcement Cameras Planned In Some Alexandria School Zones
The city expects to launch a speed enforcement cameras in some school zones in early 2023 that can result in a speeding fine up to $100.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — After funding for five speed enforcement cameras in Alexandria school zones was approved in the city's fiscal year budget, the city is planning to launch the program in early 2023.
The city's speed cameras in the school zones will automatically record speed limit violations. Once a law enforcement officer confirms the violation, a speeding citation will be mailed to the vehicle’s owner, lessee, or renter.
The exact locations of speed enforcement cameras has not been decided. According to a city news release, locations will be decided based on factors like vehicle speeds, vehicle volumes and crash history. Signage will be posted to notify drivers before the speed cameras are installed.

A 2020 law passed by the Virginia General Assembly allows localities to use speed cameras in school and work zones. According to Virginia law, a speeding violation of at least 10 miles over a posted school zone or highway work zone speed limit can carry a fine up to $100.
Other Northern Virginia localities implementing speed cameras include Arlington County and the City of Fairfax. Speed cameras are also used in areas of DC and Maryland.

The program is part of the city's Vision Zero, which aims to eliminate fatal and severe crashes by 2028. The city cites the U.S. Department of Transportation recommending speed cameras as a way to reduce traffic crashes and crashes with injuries. The speed cameras will also ease the enforcement responsibilities of Alexandria police officers, who in June adjusted how they respond to calls amidst staffing shortages.
The program is being developed this summer and is expected to be adopted in the fall before the launch in early 2023. Updates on the speed enforcement cameras are planned at the Sept. 26 Traffic & Parking Board public hearing and Oct. 11 City Council meeting.
Once decided, locations of school zone speed cameras will be posted on the speed camera program web page.
