Deadline For Registering To Vote Is Oct. 12 In Alexandria

Tuesday is the last day for residents to register or update their address before the Nov. 2 general election in Virginia.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Time is running out for unregistered voters in Alexandria who wish to participate in the Nov. 2 general election in Virginia.

For residents who are not registered to vote or need to update their address, the voter registration deadline is this Tuesday by 5 p.m. in-person, 11:59 p.m. online, or postmarked by mail on Oct. 12.

Early voting began Sept. 17 for the Virginia general election, which will decide local races for Alexandria mayor, City Council, sheriff, Alexandria School Board, and Commonwealth's Attorney. State races include governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and House of Delegates.

In-person early voting

In the City of Alexandria, in-person early voting will happen from Sept. 17 to Oct. 30. The Office of Voter Registration & Elections is open for voting through Oct. 30 but is closed Monday, Oct. 11. Beatley Central Library will be open Oct. 22 to 30. Virginia voters do not need an excuse to vote early due to 2020 state legislation.

An acceptable form of ID is required to vote in person, but it is no longer required to be a photo ID. Examples of accepted ID include a Virginia driver's license, DMV-issued ID, U.S. passport, current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck and more.

Early voting by mail

Voters who request a ballot by mail began early voting on Sept. 17. For those who do not return ballots by mail, they may be returned in person at drop boxes. Ballots may be dropped off at all polling places on Nov. 2 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. A secure 24/7 drop box outside the Office of Voter Registration and Elections is available now through 7 p.m. on Nov. 2. A drop box is also available during in-person voting hours at Beatley Library.

The quickest way to request an absentee ballot is through the Virginia Department of Elections online portal. To apply online, a Virginia driver's license number and last four digits of your Social Security number are needed.

Paper applications may also be downloaded online or received by calling the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 703-746-4050. Return paper applications by mail (132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA. 22314), fax (703-838-6449) or scanned email attachment (VoteAbsentee@alexandriava.gov).

While the witness signature requirement was exempted earlier in the pandemic, it is again legally required for the November 2021 election and future elections in Virginia. Voters must sign the return envelope and include a witness signature with the completed ballot.

The last day to request an absentee ballot by mail is 5 p.m. on Oct. 22. Mail-in ballots must be returned to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections by 5 p.m. on Nov. 2 in person or be postmarked by Nov. 2 and received by noon on Nov. 5.

What's on the ballot

All ballots will contain races for Alexandria mayor, City Council, sheriff, Alexandria School Board and Commonwealth's Attorney as well as Virginia governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and House of Delegates. The Virginia House of Delegates and Alexandria School Board races will depend on which district you live in.
