What's Open, Closed For Labor Day 2023 In Alexandria

Here are the closures to know for the Labor Day holiday and things to do around Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial last hurrah for summer as many families will head to beaches and other destinations or host backyard barbecues.

Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 4, when City of Alexandria government offices will be closed along with other services. Many students who have already started school will have a four-day weekend from Friday to Monday. Other services like transit will be open with schedule changes.

If you're staying in town for the Labor Day holiday, here are the openings and closings to know around Alexandria:

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on Monday, Sept. 4.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Schools are closed for Labor Day break from Sept. 1 to 4.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: On Monday, Sept. 4, the AWLA will be closed. For animal emergencies or wildlife concerns, call 703-746-4444. For more information, visit alexandriaanimals.org.

Courts: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk's Office, Alexandria Circuit Court, Alexandria General District Court, Alexandria Juvenile Court and Domestic Relations District Court, and the Court Service Unit (520 King St.) will be closed Monday, Sept. 4.

DASH Bus: On Monday, Sept. 4, free DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule. The free King Street Trolley will operate from King Street Metro to Alexandria City Hall every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Alexandria Transit Company administrative office will be closed. Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers are closed on Labor Day.

Health department: Alexandria Health Department, the Flora Krause Casey Pharmacy, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria High School will be closed Monday, September 4.

Historic Alexandria facilities: On Monday, Sept. 4, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum; Freedom House Museum, and the Stabler–Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All other City of Alexandria museums will be closed. For more information, visit www.alexandriava.gov/Historic.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the local Child Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5800 or the State hotline at 1-800-552-7096; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or Substance Abuse Crisis Hotline at 703-746-3401; the local Adult Protective Services Hotline at 703-746-5778 or the Adult Protective Services State Hotline at 1-888-832-3858; the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 703-527-4077 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound facility: The city’s impound facility will be closed Monday, Sept. 4. The impound facility is closed every Saturday and Sunday, as well as on all observed city holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturdays and Sundays, but not on holidays.

Libraries: On Monday, Sept. 4, all Alexandria Library branches, and the Alexandria Law Library will be closed, including services for talking books, telephone, and curbside. Visit alexlibraryva.org for more information.

Metro: Metrorail will be open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. to midnight Sunday and Monday. Most lines are normal service, except the Red Line, which will have single tracking between Friendship Heights and Medical Center on Saturday and Sunday. Trains will run every 8 minutes between Van Ness and Glenmont and every 16 minutes between Van Ness and Shady Grove.

Outdoor pools: On Monday, Sept. 4, Old Town and Warwick Pools will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The Potomac Yard Park Interactive Fountain will be open Monday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Parking: On Monday, Sept. 4, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions for metered spaces, residential permit parking districts, and other areas with signed parking time limits. This suspension of enforcement, which applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, does not permit parking in any location where it is normally prohibited (for example, "no parking" zones, loading zones or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary “no parking” signs will be enforced on Sept. 4.

Post offices: Closed on Sept. 4.

Recreation, nature, and arts centers: Most city recreation, art and nature centers will be closed, Monday, Sept. 4. Charles Houston and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Torpedo Factory and Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.alexandriava.gov/recreation-centers.

Trash and recycling: Collections for residential trash/yard waste/recycling and the curbside food waste collection pilot will be delayed by one day during the week of Monday, Sept. 4. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collections Drop-off Center will be closed Monday, Sept. 4. Visit www.alexandriava.gov/tes/solidwaste for more information.

Virginia Railway Express: VRE does not provide train service on Labor Day.
