What's Open, Closed For Thanksgiving 2018 In Alexandria
Here's your guide to what's open and closed on Thanksgiving and the surrounding days.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Many services will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday in the City of Alexandria. Some will remain closed on Black Friday, including government offices, libraries and schools.
Other services such as museums and recreation centers will reopen Friday. Businesses will kick off the holiday shopping season with special events on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. Anyone around on Friday can also check out the Market Square tree lighting at 6 p.m.
Here are the openings and closings to know on and around Thursday, Nov. 22 (Thanksgiving) and Friday, Nov. 23 (Black Friday).

City Offices: Closed Nov. 22-23.
Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed Nov. 21-23.

State Offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office will be open during normal hours on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and will be closed on Nov. 22 and 23. The Alexandria Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will close at noon on Nov. 21, and will remain closed on Nov. 22 and 23. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office at 2681 Mill Road will be closed Nov. 22-24.
Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be closed on Nov. 22 but will host the annual Kongs-giving event from noon-1:30 p.m. to make holiday treats for homeless animals. The shelter will be open on Nov. 23, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., with animal visitation beginning at noon.
DASH and King Street Trolley: On Nov. 22, the Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) bus service will not operate, but the free King Street Trolley will operate on its regular schedule from 10:30 a.m. to midnight between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River waterfront. On Friday, Nov. 23, both DASH and the King Street Trolley will operate on their regular weekday schedules. See www.dashbus.com for more information.
Emergency Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778, and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.
Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King Street) and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard Street) will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and will remain closed on Nov. 22-23. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King Street) will be closed on Nov. 22-23.
Historic sites: All city museums will be closed on Nov. 22. On Nov. 23, all museums will be open during regular hours except for the Archaeology Museum (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) and the Black History Museum (closed). The Black History Museum will have special hours on Sunday, Nov.25, for “Museum Shop Sunday,” from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. For more information, visit the Office of Historic Alexandria website.
Libraries: Closed Nov. 22-23.
Metrorail: On Nov. 22, Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. There is no track work scheduled for Nov. 22-23. For more information, visit www.wmata.com.
Metrobus: On Nov. 22, Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule www.wmata.com.
Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Thursday, Nov. 22, and Saturday, Nov. 24. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on Nov. 22 and 24. All normal parking restrictions will be enforced on Friday, Nov. 23.
Recreation and Arts Centers: City recreation and art centers, including the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility and the Torpedo Factory Art Center, will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22. On Friday, Nov. 23, the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility will be open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m., the Charles Houston Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and the Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. All other recreation centers will be closed on Nov. 23.
Trash Pickup: Regular trash and recycling will happen the week of Nov. 19, including on Thursday, Nov. 22. On Thanksgiving Day, trash and recycling collection will begin at 6 a.m. to clear routes early for the Annual Turkey Trot. Workers will have earlier collection times on Thanksgiving Day to have Thursday evening and Friday with their families.
