Young Life in an Old Town: Windmill Hill Park

501 S. Union St.

With Halloween right around the corner, I think we have a good month of nice playground weather left before the really chilly days set in, and Windmill Hill Park is one of the best areas in Old Town to take advantage of beautiful fall weather.

When the weather is good, Windmill Hill Park is a busy spot. On any given weekend, you’re likely to see a volleyball game in session on the sand court, dogs running around the dog park, kids playing soccer, rolling (or sledding) down the big hill, and conquering the two levels of playground equipment. Situated on South Union Street, the park is adjacent to the water which makes for lovely views. There is playground equipment for toddlers and older children as well as picnic tables and benches.  With an (unfenced) dog park at the south end, there’s really something for everyone. Pack a picnic and bring the whole family!

Location: Five blocks south of the hustle and bustle of King Street, the park is in a residential area (which means parking is usually not a problem), but close enough to walk to and from dinner at or one of the restaurants on the east end of King Street. I think the close proximity to the water gives this park a really serene feeling.

Equipment: The playground spans two levels. The top level, which is closer to Lee Street, is wonderful for younger children. There are bucket swings, a sandbox and a twisty tunnel slide. Two rope climbing features connect the top level of the playground to the bottom level which is more suitable for older kids. There is a large play structure with multiple slides, a shaky bridge, climbing features and swings. This is an older playground, so you’ll find mulch rather than the rubber surfaces of the newer playgrounds. Some of the play structures look a little dated, but everything is completely functional (at the least the last time I visited).

Shade? The toddler area of the playground at the top of the hill is surrounded by trees and offers nice shade. In the evening, there is often a nice breeze from the water.

For Adults: Lots of benches and picnic tables.

Fenced? Yes

Bathrooms? Unless you are lucky enough to live in one of the charming row houses near the park, you are out of luck. There are no public bathrooms here, but there is a water fountain.

Miscellaneous: Sometimes in the evenings, I feel as if there are a lot of mosquitoes here (maybe because of the proximity to the water and so many trees?) and on occasion, we’ve been chased away from the sandbox by bees. Keep your wits about you!
