The murder set off a nationwide firestorm, as Hassanen was a Muslim and walking with friends toward her mosque during Ramadan when Martinez Torres beat her to death and dumped her in a pond. However, Fairfax County Police claim that there is no indication that Martinez Torres attacked Hassanen for her faith, and that the tragic incident stemmed from an escalating dispute between Martinez Torres, who was driving, and the group of friends Hassanen was walking with. Friends and family doubt this explanation, however.
Hassanen, a sophomore at South Lakes High School, was walking at around 4 a.m. in Herndon on June 18 with about 15 other teenagers when Martinez Torres came upon the group. A boy on a bike started arguing with him, and Martinez Torres drove his car up on a curb, prompting the group to scatter, according to reports.
