Woman Struck, Killed By Fairfax County Fire Engine In Reston: Report

RESTON, VA — Fairfax County Police are investigating the death of a Middleburg woman who was struck by a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue engineers in Reston early Monday morning, according a release

Police officers and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel were called around 2:18 a.m. to Glade Drive West of Laurel Glade Court for the report of a woman who appeared to be intoxicate lying in the roadway, according to a release.

Investigators from the Crash Reconstruction Unit determined that an officer who arrived first was waved down by the person who called in the complaint. The officer had passed by the woman who was lying in the roadway.

By the time the officer, identified as a captain, saw the woman, he shouted and signaled to a fire engine that was following him to stop, but the engine failed to stop in time and struck the woman.

Although the woman, who police identified as 23-year-old Ashley Boardman of Middleburg, received medical care at the scene and was taken to a nearby hospital, she was later pronounced deceased, according to police.

A preliminary investigation determined that speed was not a factor in the crash. Investigators are working to ascertain if drugs or alcohol were factors in Boardman's death.
