Celebrate National Bird Feeding Month In Roer's Renovated Aviary In Reston
Roer's Zoofari is celebrating National Bird Feeding Month throughout February with fun activities and a chance to feed the zoo's many birds.
RESTON, VA — February is National Bird Feeding Month and Roer's Zoofari, a petting zoo and safari experience in Reston, is celebrating the occasion with a variety of fun-filled, bird-centric activities.
“We are excited to welcome people to the zoo to participate in all of our fun bird-related events,” said Roer’s Zoofari CEO Vanessa Roer, in a release. “Even during the winter months, it’s a perfect time for visitors to learn more about birds and how we can work to help their survival.”
National Bird Feeding Month was started in 1994 as a way to encourage people to provide food, water and shelter for wild birds, as well as bring attention to all of the different species that can be found across the U.S.

Roer's, home to hundreds of birds, ranging from chickens to peacocks, reopened its recently remodeled aviary. Visitors will be able to feed the birds, most of which are omnivores, meaning they have a diet ranging from seeds and berries to small insects.
“Our birds aren’t picky about who holds their favorite food, especially during the winter," said Crystal Troutman, the lead keeper at Roer's. "This month is the perfect time to get an up-close feeding experience with our animals and see some birds locals won’t typically see in their backyard.”

Visitors are also invited to download bird coloring pages from the Roer’s Zoofari website and submit finished designs on social media or in-person. The winning design will receive a membership to the zoo.
Roer's Zoofari is located 1228 Hunter Mill Road. Hours of operation are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Information about purchasing passes is available online.
