📰 News we're reading

1. Fairfax County Opens Door To Redevelopment Of Reston Metro Kiss & Ride Site (patch.com) — Reston residents may see big changes around the Reston Town Center Metro as Fairfax County supervisors agreed to fold the county-owned Kiss & Ride lot into a private rezoning request. The move lets planners study a larger, transit-oriented redevelopment that could add housing and improve transit facilities, while keeping future decisions about selling or leasing the Reston parcel firmly in the county's hands.

2. Fairfax Supervisors Honor Reston YMCA On 25th Anniversary (patch.com) — Reston residents are being recognized along with their YMCA, as the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors honored the YMCA Fairfax County Reston for 25 years of youth programs, wellness initiatives, and community support. Local leaders recalled how a public‑private partnership and resident backing built the facility, which has since provided millions in financial assistance and become a hub for camps, childcare, and healthy living.

3. How Reston's library is responding to community complaints about safety (wtop.com) — Reston residents concerned about safety at the Reston Regional Library will see new staff training and reinforced security measures after complaints about disruptive behavior during and after a recent closure. The branch, which already has the county's only full‑time library security guard and a posted Code of Behavior, is working to balance being welcoming to all with keeping the space calm, orderly, and safe for patrons.

4. Virginia's first Brandy Melville store headed to Reston (theburn.com) — Reston shoppers can look forward to Virginia's first Brandy Melville opening in Reston Town Center, taking over the former Apple Store space. The trendy women's clothing chain, already in D.C. and Rockville, is now expanding into the commonwealth with a sizable 4,600-square-foot location.

5. D.C. region rents would be higher today without pandemic, data shows (ffxnow.com) — Reston renters are paying some of Fairfax County's higher apartment prices, with August median rents at $2,253 for one-bedrooms and $2,385 for two-bedrooms, up slightly year over year. A new analysis shows regional rents are still below where they'd likely be without the pandemic, even as Fairfax County communities like Reston remain above the D.C. metro median.
