Rebuilding Together Volunteers Complete Veterans Day Repairs at Fellowship House at Hunter Woods, a Reston Senior Housing Facility

On Saturday, November 11, more than 20 skilled volunteers mobilized by Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church worked to make critical repairs at Fellowship House at Hunter Woods in Reston. Marcy Bartlett, Rebuilding Together Program Director, states, “Our 22 volunteers found it deeply satisfying to spend Veterans Day helping low-income seniors at Fellowship House live more safely in their homes, especially to reduce their risk of falls.”

Fellowship House at Hunters Woods provides affordable high-rise living for more than 200 low-income seniors. But many of its occupants were at risk of falls, and bathrooms generally pose highest risks. Skilled volunteers installed handheld showerheads and no-slips strips in the bathrooms of about 80 units, and installed grab bars for those at highest risk. These safety improvements were made possible through the partnerships of Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church, Fellowship Square, SunTrust Bank and Dr. Melanie Bush, PT from Select Senior Options, Virginia Healthcare Services and the Northern Virginia Fall Prevention Coalition.

Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church mobilizes volunteers and community partners to make repairs at no charge for low-income homeowners to make their homes safe and healthy and help seniors age in place.
