RESTON, VA — A Reston company has made a huge acquisition by buying a competitor and doubling its size, the latest in an aggressive plan to expand the company's size.

Telemedicine provider Avizia Inc., located at 12018 Sunrise Valley Drive, announced it had acquired Seattle competitor Carena, which would increase the number of health systems on its telehealth platform to 70 -- twice the original number, according to Washington Business Journal report. It would also increase the total number of employees to 143.

Carena designs and operates virtual clinics for health systems, providing access for more than 35 million consumers, Avizia says.

“This acquisition combines two of the nation’s leading virtual care platforms,” Mike Baird, CEO of Avizia, said in the statement. “With Carena’s select provider network, Avizia empowers hospitals with the most comprehensive, customizable and trusted telehealth solution available.”

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Avizia's corporate headquarters will remain in Reston, and Carena will continue to operate out of Seattle.

Avizia has been in the midst of some ambitious growth. In August, the company announced it would expand its presence in Fairfax County, creating 27 new jobs.

“Avizia chose to operate in Fairfax County, and Reston specifically, because the tech community is extremely supportive,” Baird said in a statement. “CEOs in the community have a culture of collaboration and work together to support and grow the tech industry. We have the right location to attract from the city and the suburbs and our staff has great access to quality housing, office space and top schools.”

Avizia has doubled its office space at its Reston headquarters in the past year, and that trend is likely to continue for the next five years, Baird said.
