Northern Region Trails Eastern, Southwest VA For New Cases
The northern region's hospitalizations are less than half of the eastern region's total, according to Virginia Department of Health data.
VIRGINIA — An additional 981 coronavirus cases were reported Sunday, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Three more deaths were reported Sunday, a lower number after 41 new deaths were added to the total on Saturday. The latest cumulative totals are 91,782 cases, 7,955 hospitalizations, and 2,218 deaths.
While the northern region was the center of the coronavirus crisis in Virginia months ago, it has been trailing the eastern region for new cases lately. In the eastern region, additional restrictions have been implemented in Hampton Roads due to increasing new cases, hospitalizations and positive tests. New cases by health region on Sunday include 424 in the eastern region, 200 in the southwest region, 173 in the northern region, 125 in the central region, 146 in the southwest region and 86 in the northwest region.
The northern region also has a lower average of positive tests than the eastern region and statewide averages. As of July 29, the statewide 7-day moving average of positive tests was 7.2 percent. The northern region's positive average was 5.9 percent, the eastern region's was 10.1 percent, the southwest region's was 7.7 percent, the central region's was 6.5 percent, and northwest region's was 4.7 percent. As of Sunday, 1,136,568 nasal swab tests have been completed across Virginia, an increase of 12,641 from Saturday.

Current hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients fell from 1,256 to 1,172 between Saturday and Sunday. The breakdown of hospitalizations by region is 492 in the eastern region, 220 in the northern region, 193 in the central region, 169 in the southwest region, and 98 in the northwest region.
There are 138 patients with pending or confirmed COVID-19 tests on ventilators and 267 in the intensive care units across Virginia, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. Ventilator use among all Virginia hospital patients stands at 22 percent, while ICU occupancy is at 78 percent. The average ICU occupancy for Virginia in 2019 was 67 percent. No hospitals report difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

The 20 to 29 age group accounts for the most coronavirus cases in Virginia, while the 80 and up age group has experienced the most deaths.
The breakdown of cases by age group is:

- 40-49: 15,380
- 50-59: 13,277
- 60-69: 8,636
- 70-79: 4,508
- 80 and up: 4,303

VDH now provides weekly updates on contact tracing efforts. As of Friday, health officials contact an average 84.3 percent of cases within 24 hours. Health officials were unable to contact 18.3 percent of contacts of confirmed cases. There are 9,809 contacts of cases under public health monitoring.

- Alexandria: 2,820 cases, 268 hospitalizations, 59 deaths; increase of nine cases, two hospitalizations removed
- Arlington County: 2,925 cases, 435 hospitalizations, 136 deaths; increase of 19 cases
- Fairfax County: 15,768 cases, 1,902 hospitalizations, 523 deaths; increase of 79 cases, two hospitalizations and one death
- Fairfax City: 81 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of one case
- Falls Church: 59 cases, 10 hospitalizations, six deaths; no change
- Loudoun County: 5,034 cases, 336 hospitalizations, 112 deaths; increase of 20 cases
- Manassas: 1,609 cases, 118 hospitalizations, 20 deaths; increase of two cases
- Manassas Park: 500 cases, 50 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of two cases
- Prince William County: 8,907 cases, 783 hospitalizations, 172 deaths; increase of 14 cases and four hospitalizations
- Fredericksburg: 358 cases, 41 hospitalizations, two deaths; increase of two cases and one hospitalization
- Spotsylvania County: 1,332 cases, 93 hospitalizations, 35 deaths; increase of 14 cases and one hospitalization
- Stafford County: 1,266 cases, 116 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of eight cases
