Slain Reston Teen Nabra Hassanen To Be Remembered This Weekend

Hassanen was killed in what police believe was a brutal act of road rage a month ago.

RESTON, VA — It's been a month since Reston teen Nabra Hassanen was murdered, and the community is gathering at the mosque where she worshiped Sunday to remember her life -- and to help those dealing with the aftermath.

Police believe Hassanen, a 17-year-old Muslim girl from Reston, was killed in a fit of road rage after she and the group she was walking with got into an argument with a driver. Police arrested 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres, who is originally from El Salvador but resided in Sterling.

The All Dulles Area Muslim Society, located at 46903 Sugarland Road in Sterling, will host "A Beautiful Cadence: Honoring The One Month Anniversary of Sr. Nabra" on Sunday, July 16 from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

In addition to uplifting messages, there will also be a general question-and-answer about the legal process, although no details of the case will be discussed.

"This is a general Q&A for youth and community members to understand the process of a legal trial and ask questions," the notice states.

After a prayer and community song, girls and boys will break out into separate sessions. Girls will spend their session "celebrating Nabra's love of fashion and design," while boys will engage in "basketball, brotherhood, and team building activities."
