This once-in-a-generation moment—one of celebration, reflection, and aspiration—will be marked with numerous events across the country, including a fleet of the world’s most magnificent international tall ships and military ships making their way up the country’s east coast in an epic peacetime gathering. Primary ports include New Orleans, <a href="https://sail250virginia.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Norfolk</a>, Baltimore, New York, and Boston.&nbsp;
The City of Richmond and the Virginia Museum of History &amp; Culture are proud to partner in hosting Richmond SailFest, a Sail Virginia℠ 2026 Affiliate Harbor. Kicking off Central Virginia’s countdown to America’s 250th anniversary, Richmond will host several impressive tall ships along with dockside entertainment and concessions. This FREE, family-friendly, weekend-long festival will feature ship tours, live music and performances, historical re-enactors, exhibitions of history and art, and much more. The evening of Saturday, June 13, will end with an epic display of fireworks over the James River!

We are so excited and honored to have local author Anne Blankman join us this summer! She will present the majority of this interactive program, which is based on her book The Enemy's Daughter. Participants' views will be challenged as they learn some details about World War I and meet the book's young characters. This event also allows attendees to create one craft near the end of the program and take another activity home with them. Light refreshments will be provided by Friends of the Goochland Library. 

 Anne Blankman is an award-winning children's author. Her work has earned many accolades, including the National Jewish Book Award, the California Young Reader Medal, a Sydney Taylor Honor, an ALA Notable, multiple starred reviews, and Italy's&nbsp;Amo Questo Libro&nbsp;Book Award. For several years, she served as a youth services librarian, but now she writes full-time. Anne's most recent book,&nbsp;The Enemy's Daughter, tells the story of a German girl stranded after her ship is attacked during World War One. Young paleontologists are invited to dress in their fanciest tea attire—or their fiercest dinosaur gear! We’ll enjoy some sugar free lemonade, cookies (biscuits), and popcorn, listen to a dino-mite story, create a fun dinosaur craft, and stomp our way through some prehistoric games.

Before joining ProPublica, Carr spent more than a decade as a television reporter across the South, including at WSB-TV in Atlanta, where she earned four regional Emmy Awards for investigative and live reporting. She currently serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Journalism at Morehouse College. Carr is the author of The Price of Exclusion: The Pursuit of Healthcare in a Segregated Nation, an ancestral journey that explores the legacy of Black physicians and healthcare inequality. Daphne Maxwell Reid is best known for her role as Aunt Vivian on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and continues to enjoy a vibrant acting career spanning over 40 years, with recent appearances in film and television including Bel-Air, Fantasy Island, and The Business of Christmas. Beyond the screen, she is a dedicated community leader, serving on the boards of the Richmond Ballet and ChildFund International. An accomplished photographer and creative entrepreneur, Daphne is the visionary behind Fresh Prints®, a global collection of door photography featured in multiple published books and exhibitions. She continues to expand her artistry through design, publishing, and wearable art, blending storytelling and creativity across every medium.
