Brooke Newman will discuss her landmark new book, The Crown’s Silence, a revelatory history of the British monarchy’s centuries-long involvement in the transatlantic slave trade and colonial slavery. Spanning from the Tudor era to the reign of Queen Victoria, Newman traces how successive monarchs authorized, financed, profited from, and defended systems of African bondage across the Atlantic world. Racial slavery, she argues, was built into the machinery of empire, underwriting royal power, wealth extraction, and British overseas expansion. Drawing on extensive archival research, Newman exposes both the Crown’s active role in sustaining slavery and the deliberate silences that followed abolition. Machines that exchange cash for virtual currency — commonly known as crypto kiosks or “crypto ATMs” — are rapidly appearing in supermarkets, convenience stores, gas stations and other everyday locations across the country. Unfortunately, these ATM look-alikes have become a prime vehicle for scams, often targeting older adults and costing Virginians thousands of dollars. To combat this growing threat, AARP is advocating for state laws that regulate crypto kiosks and strengthen consumer protections. Legislation establishing a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency kiosks passed the Virginia Senate unanimously, and an identical bill passed the House of Delegates with strong bipartisan support. Join us for an important discussion on how AARP Virginia is leading the fight to protect consumers from crypto kiosk scams. This webinar will be led by State Advocacy Director Jared Calfee, and will feature Delegate Michelle Maldonado to talk about her work on this in the General Assembly.
