📰 News we're reading

1. Entering This Majestic Downtown Virginia Castle Will Make You Feel Like You've Stepped Into A Gothic Fairy Tale (myfamilytravels.com) — If you live in or visit Richmond, Old City Hall on East Broad Street is a free, must-see Gothic landmark with a soaring four-story atrium and rich preservation story. Open weekdays with simple ID check, it's an easy stop near the Capitol and Library of Virginia, showcasing local stonework, dramatic architecture, and meticulous restoration that nearly didn't survive past demolition threats.

2. Man charged after Richmond man stabbed to death in Gilpin Court (wtvr.com) — Richmond police have charged a Chesterfield man with first-degree murder after a 63-year-old Richmond resident was fatally stabbed in Gilpin Court last month. Investigators are still seeking additional information and are asking anyone with tips about the Saint Peter's Street incident to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers.

3. Data: Housing is more out of reach and homeownership is down for younger Richmonders (richmonder.org) — Younger adults in the Richmond region are finding homeownership increasingly out of reach, with local home prices rising far faster than their wages over the past decade. New data presented to the Virginia Housing Commission show Richmond's younger residents buying fewer homes, living with parents longer, and competing with older homeowners for the same limited housing stock.

4. 'They love learning' (yale.edu) — A longtime Richmond elementary teacher credits Yale's National Initiative with reinvigorating her classroom and inspiring rich units on topics from Chesapeake Bay ecology to math. Her work helped launch annual James River field trips, a Minds in Motion partnership with Richmond Ballet, and momentum for a local teachers institute with VCU that could benefit more city educators and students.

5. Shelter Worker Finds Dog Standing On Top Of Her Kennel And Realizes She's Houdini Reincarnated (thedodo.com) — A clever husky named Maya at Richmond Animal Care & Control surprised staff by escaping her covered kennel and calmly perching on top. Rescued earlier this year from a painful situation in a Richmond yard, she's now thriving in foster care while the city shelter searches for a permanent local home.
