Flying Squirrels headed to court over broken promises related to the Diamond District (wric.com) — Richmond's Flying Squirrels ownership has sued the city, its Economic Development Authority, and Diamond District developers, claiming broken promises tied to the long-promised mixed-use redevelopment around CarMax Park. The team says construction blocking the main entrance could hurt concerts and popular events like Squirrel-O-Ween and WinterWorld, and is seeking financial damages in Richmond City Circuit Court.
   

2. Deep cleaning, air quality testing continue at Bellevue Elementary over weekend (nbc12.com) — Families at Richmond's Bellevue Elementary are waiting to see if deep cleaning and air quality work will make the school safe to reopen by Tuesday after mold and moisture problems closed the building. Students are temporarily learning at Lucks Field Community Center while crews scrub, dehumidify, and retest the air, with Richmond Public Schools promising nightly updates through the holiday weekend.
   

3. Over 13,000 Central Virginia homes, businesses without power due to storms (wric.com) — Hundreds of Richmond homes and businesses are among more than 13,000 Dominion Energy customers across Central Virginia who lost power after Friday night's severe thunderstorms. Counties including Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover and others are also affected, and residents are urged to check Dominion's outage map for restoration estimates and ongoing updates.
   

4. RACC Tommie Fund running dry, shelter seeks donations: 'Word is getting out' (foxrichmond.com) — Richmond Animal Care and Control is asking city residents to help refill its Tommie Fund, the emergency medical fund for injured animals that's been nearly depleted after helping shelters across Virginia. With license plate revenue not arriving until late September, RACC hopes to raise about $10,000 more so it can keep saying yes when local and statewide animals need lifesaving care.
   

5. HVAC systems under pressure amid heat wave in Central Virginia (wric.com) — A heat advisory centered on Richmond and Central Virginia is pushing home and school HVAC systems to their limits, driving up repair calls and energy use. A local HVAC expert shares practical maintenance tips, like frequent filter checks and tune-ups, to help residents keep homes cooler, avoid breakdowns, and manage power bills during the humid stretch.
