• Brief tornado touches down in Surry County (smithfieldtimes.com) — A brief tornado touched down along Colonial Trail West in Surry County, damaging a shed, trampoline, and several trees but sparing nearby homes and residents. Emergency officials say the twister moved toward Prince George County, with under 1.3 inches of rain reported in Surry and Isle of Wight despite the strong winds.
   

• Roanoke Is in the First Wave of Virginia's New Chip-and-Tap EBT Card Rollout (theroanokestar.com) — Surry residents who use SNAP benefits are in the first wave to receive Virginia’s new chip-and-tap EBT cards, aimed at cutting down on benefit theft. The cards should arrive by October 1, and recipients will need to activate them, set a PIN, and keep monitoring balances and addresses to ensure their food assistance stays secure.
