5 Displaced From Merrifield Townhouse Fire

A kitchen stove malfunction started the fire, according to fire investigators.

Five people were displaced from a townhouse fire in Merrifield on Friday, Nov. 30, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

Around 11:59 p.m., Fairfax County and City of Fairfax units responded to the 9400 block of Lee Highway. Units found smoke showing from the front of the end unit home and quickly put out a fire in the kitchen. No one was injured.

Six people were home when smoke alarms alerted them to the fire. All safely evacuated before firefighters arrived.

Fire investigators traced the fire back to behind the gas stove in the kitchen. A malfunction with the stove as the oven was turned on started the blaze. Damages are estimated to be $93,750.

The residents have declined Red Cross assistance.
