Blood Donations Sought At Inova As Winter Storm Strains Supply

FAIRFAX, VA — Inova Blood Donor Services is facing a critically low blood supply due to Monday's winter storm, the health system shared.

With January being National Blood Donor Month, there's no better time to make a donation. As of Jan. 4, the blood supply is considered low for all blood types except A negative. That includes O positive, O negative, A positive, B positive, B negative, AB positive, and AB negative.

To meet the needs of patients, Inova typically needs over 200 units of blood collected each day from blood, platelet, plasma and double red cell donors. Donated blood has a shelf life of 42 days while donated platelets have a shelf life of five days.

All blood donation centers are open with walk-ins and appointments welcome. Appointments can be made at www.inovablood.org or by calling 1-866-256-6372.
