UPDATE: Southbound Chain Bridge Road Reopens; Northbound Closed

Construction crew reportedly hit a 2-inch natural gas line, shutting down Chain Bridge Road near Courthouse Road Thursday afternoon.

UPDATE Thursday 4:25 p.m.: The northbound lanes of Chain Bridge Road between Hibbard and Oakton Glenn Road, including the intersection of Courthouse Road, will be closed until about 5 p.m., according to an estimate by Fairfax County Police; also Courthouse Road, between Edgelea and Chain Bridge Road, will be closed until about 5 p.m. as well.

UPDATE Thursday 4:10 p.m.: Contractors hit a 2-inch gas line Thursday afternoon causing several homes to be evacuated and the closing of Chain Bridge Road in both directions. The area is near Courthouse Road.

As of about 4:10 p.m., southbound Chain Bridge Road had reopened, according to Washington Gas spokesman Ruben Rodriguez. Washington Gas got a call about the incident at about 2:15 p.m., Rodriguez noted. No word on when repairs will be completed.

UPDATE Thursday 3:20 p.m.: Several homes in the area of a gas leak at Chain Bridge Road and Courthouse Road near the Vienna/Oakton area have been evacuated, according to Daniel L. Schmidt, a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue spokesman.

The estimate is Chain Bridge Road will be closed in both directions for about four hours while Washington Gas officials find and repair a gas leak from a 2-inch natural gas line, Schmidt said. Washington Gas officials are on the scene, he said.

The leak and road closure will likely affect the evening rush hour.

Anyone evacuated from their homes will not be able to go back home “until further notice,” Schmidt said.

Fairfax County has issued an alert Thursday afternoon that Chain Bridge Rd (123) and Courthouse Road near Vienna and Oakton are closed in all directions due to a gas leak.

Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue is reportedly on the scene as are representatives from Washington Gas.
