For parents uncertain about a religious direction for their families, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax (UUCF) offers a rich and unique Religious Exploration (RE) program for all children, from pre-K toddlers through high school seniors, emphasizing exploration of all religious traditions. Registration for the RE program, which offers classes to more than 300 children on Sundays during worship services, is now open by calling 703-281-4230. Classes start on Sun., Sep. 20.
According to Parish Minister Rev. David A. Miller, “From our youngest children to adults, spiritual growth at UUCF emphasizes exploration of religious wisdom from various traditions, allowing a religious path that flows through personal experience. Our RE staff and 100 parent volunteers work hard to introduce age-appropriate materials to the children in a fun, interesting and meaningful way.”
One such program, the Building Bridges curriculum acquaints high schoolers with the diversity of faiths worshipped in the United States. Teachers talk with students about the foundations of such faiths, and take the class on field trips to neighboring places of worship. Realizing the importance to create a society where sexuality is treated as a normal, healthy, and positive aspect of life, UUCF provides students with a sexuality education program. Students in 8th grade can attend the Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexuality Education Program and children in Grade 1 and 5 have a two-month OWL class at the end of the year. A series of programs and resources for all ages, Tapestry of Faith, nurtures Unitarian Universalist identity, spiritual growth, a transforming faith, and vital communities of justice and love.

This type of unique educational programming contributed to UUCF being recognized in 2011 as one of only four “Breakthrough Congregations,” as designated by the Unitarian Universalist Association, an association of more than 1,000 autonomous, self-governing Unitarian Universalist congregations.
