Current Coronavirus Hospitalizations At New High In Virginia

Northern Virginia leads the state in hospitalizations, but the region's total is considerably less than late April and May numbers.

VIRGINIA — Virginia's current coronavirus hospitalizations reached a new high on Sunday, according to Virginia Department of Health data.

The statewide number of current COVID-19 hospital patients stands at 1,628, and the seven-day average is 1,566.3. That's close to the 1,573.3 peak average on May 12. Northern Virginia leads the state with 437 current patients, but that's still below the peak of over 800 patients for several days in late April and early May. Other current hospitalization totals in regions include 357 in the southwest region, 319 in the eastern region, 300 in the central region and 215 in the northwest region.

The 1,628 statewide patients include 155 on ventilators and 365 in the intensive care units, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. Ventilator use among all hospital patients in Virginia is at 27 percent, while ICU occupancy is at 72 percent. The 2019 average for ICU occupancy was 67 percent.

There are no hospitals reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours. The last time PPE difficulties were reported was Sept. 18.

As for cases, Northern Virginia's average of daily cases hit a new high on Sunday amid increases since mid-November. The seven-day average of daily cases is 815.7 with 598 new cases recorded on Sunday. The previous peak seven-day average before November's case increases had been 685.3 on May 31.

Statewide, 2,325 coronavirus cases were reported on Sunday, with the seven-day average being 2,592. In other regions, new cases include 589 in the eastern region (428.7 seven-day average) 419 in the southwest region (573.4 seven-day average), 413 in the northwest region (424.1 seven-day average) and 306 in the central region (350.3 seven-day average).

While the seven-day case average is up in Northern Virginia, the percent positivity of PCR tests average is starting to decrease after increases through mid-November. The latest seven-day average is 7.6 percent as of Nov. 25. That average is not close to the peak 35.8 percent average seen on April 26, when the number of tests performed was lower.

Statewide, the latest seven-day average of daily tests reported was 27,404 as of Nov. 25. For Northern Virginia alone, that average is 7,765 tests. The statewide positive average is 7.4 percent, while other regional averages include 6 percent in the central region, 6.2 percent in the northwest region, 7.2 percent in the eastern region, and 10.4 percent in the southwest region.

There were four new deaths reported on Sunday, and the seven-day average of deaths reported each day is 17. The seven-day average of new daily deaths reported per 100,000 people is 0.2. On a similar note, the seven-day average of new daily hospitalizations per 100,000 is 0.9, and the total cases reported per 100,000 within the last 14 days are 399. Cumulative totals for the coronavirus in Virginia are 235,942 cases, 14,572 hospitalizations, and 4,058 deaths.

  • 40s age group: 35,591 cases, 1765 hospitalizations, 98 deaths
  • 50s age group: 33,444 cases, 2,620 hospitalizations, 281 deaths
  • 60s age group: 22,193 cases, 2,944 hospitalizations, 628 deaths
  • 70s age group: 12,258 cases, 2,705 hospitalizations, 1,051 deaths
  • 80 and up: 9,952 cases, 2,464 hospitalizations, 1,943 deaths
  • Not reported: 1,770 cases, 27 hospitalizations, 7 deaths
