A temporary bridge along Hunter Mill Road across Difficult Run was installed in November 2011 when the original bridge was deemed structurally deficient by the Department of Transportation. Planning for the construction of a permanent bridge began shortly thereafter.
By reusing some of the foundation of the temporary bridge currently in place, officials said in a recent news release they hope to accelerate the construction process. The bridge will be 50 feet long and about 26 feet wide, with two 11-foot-wide lanes and two four-foot-wide shoulders. It is expected construction will force the closure of Hunter Mill Road for 20 days when the bridge is erected in the summer of 2018.
