Diversion First!

Forum Presentation on Sunday, December 13th at 12:30pm in Oakton

Diversion First! in Fairfax County: a new plan to divert individuals with mental health conditions from jail into treatment.

The presenter will be Tisha Deeghan, Executive Director of the Fairfax –Falls Church Community Services Board.

This event will take place this Sunday, December 13th at 12:30pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, 2709 Hunter Mill Rd. in Oakton, VA. The event will be held in the UUCF Sanctuary Building.

Prompted in part by the tragic jail death of Natasha McKenna, Fairfax County is moving to create a recovery-oriented, Diversion First! community response to individuals experiencing mental health issues when encountered by public safety officials.

Speaker, Tisha Deeghan, Executive Director of the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, will talk about new roles and responsibilities of human services and public safety officials to ensure that Fairfax dramatically reduces the number of incarcerated youth and adults with mental illness, substance use disorders, and behavioral issues.

Speaker background: Tisha Deeghan’s public county agency provides services for people with concerns related to mental health, substance use, and intellectual and developmental disabilities. Deeghan has worked in the field of mental health and substance use disorder treatment and prevention for 35 years. She earned a BA degree in psychology a MA degree in Social Work from Michigan State University; she also has a Master of Health Services Administration/Public Health degree from the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. She is a licensed social worker and marriage and family therapist.
