VIENNA, VA — Vienna just got a bit sweeter with the opening of Donutchew Monday in a former Starbucks location.

Donutchew, a Northern Virginia-based business, is open at 107 Maple Ave W. As the business name suggests, the featured menu item is the mochi donut, a dense and chewy donut with a ring shape and made with glutinous rice flour. According to Roongnapa Kaewprasit, who owns the business with her husband, there are 12 flavors offered daily and about 20 total. Seasonal flavor options are also planned. Mochi donuts are sold as one, by the half dozen or by the dozen.

Aside from mochi donuts, customers can try croffles, a mix between a croissant and waffle. Some of the flavors include the pepperoni pizza, crème brûlée and honey garlic butter. Macarons are also available as one or by the half dozen.

The drink menu centers around milk teas, fruit teas made with real fruit, lemonades and Yakult (Korean yogurt).

Donutchew first opened inside Annandale's K Market International food hall and also has locations in Fair Oaks Mall, Centreville and Gaithersburg. Other locations are planned in Kingstowne, Fairfax City, Richmond and Alpharetta, Georgia.

Kaewprasit told Patch the former Starbucks location is a good location for the business. She also said the town has similar kinds of restaurants that support each other rather than compete. As for the customers, Kaewprasit said they are welcoming and willing to try new things.

"In Vienna, they have a lot of people, very nice, kind, and they'll support local business," said Kaewprasit.

A grand opening will be held at a date in August to be announced. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Starbucks used to be open at the location along with another Maple Avenue location before consolidating at a new drive-thru location at 362 Maple Avenue E.

Another option for mochi donuts and bubble tea called Bubble Mochi opened earlier this year nearby at 155 Maple Avenue W.
