Drive-Thru Starbucks Proposed In Vienna

The Starbucks would take the place of the Taco Bell at 362 Maple Avenue East.

Starbucks has proposed a drive-thru location at 362 Maple Avenue East in Vienna, the current location of a Taco Bell in the former Donuts of Vienna site. The Planning Commission has advanced the Starbucks proposal to the Board of Zoning Appeals, which will meet on April 18.

Starbucks is requesting conditional use permits for outdoor seating and a drive-thru. Starbucks would remove two parking spaces to create a patio area. The Planning Commission, which met on March 28, says the drive-thru meets all requirements and the outdoor seating will improve the surrounding area.

A town study estimates that the Starbucks would bring an additional 665 car trips a day to the site, including 169 in the peak hour between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. The study noted that the Starbucks will have six stacking spaces for the drive-thru and concluded that queuing should not be an issue.

Proposed hours are 5 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday to Friday, 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday. Starbucks has other Vienna locations at 107 Maple Ave West and 207 Maple Ave East.

The Taco Bell, which opened in 1997, resulted in litigation between the restaurant and town when it was first proposed. Town officials initially opposed the location but came to a compromise on operating hours, landscaping, lighting, and building colors.
