VIENNA, VA — The Vienna Police Department is planning to hold a drug take back day, a one-day opportunity for residents to get rid of unwanted medications.

The drug take back event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can anonymously turn in old, expired, unused, or unwanted medications at the collection point inside the Vienna Police Department, 215 Center Street South. Accepted items include prescription medications, controlled or non-controlled substances, and over-the-counter drugs. Medications can be disposed in original containers or disposed directly into the collection box. Identifying information should be removed from prescription labels. Liquid products should remain sealed in the original container to prevent leakage.

Intravenous solutions, injectables, and syringes cannot be accepted. Vape pens and other e-cigarette devices can be collected only after batteries are removed.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, an initiative by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, seeks to provide a safe way to dispose of medications and educate the public about the risk of unused medications being misused, abused or stolen. Events are held twice a year in April and October.

Residents can also search for locations for year-round medication disposal.
