Fairfax County Budget Town Halls In Hunter Mill District Planned

VIENNA, VA — Two budget town halls are coming up in the Hunter Mill District for residents to learn about the Fairfax County budget proposal and ask questions. The meetings are several weeks before the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold public hearings on the budget.

Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn will host a virtual budget town hall at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 20 at 7 p.m. through Microsoft Teams. Residents may also join by phone at 571-429-5982 with code 347 661 555#.

The next town hall will be held in person at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28 at James Madison High School, Warhawk Lecture Hall, 2500 James Madison Drive, Vienna, VA.

Alcorn is hosting the meetings to get input on the budget proposal. County staff will be present to answer budget questions. Melanie Meren, the Hunter Mill District representative on the Fairfax County School Board, will be on hand to answer questions about the Fairfax County Public Schools budget.

County Executive Bryan Hill presented the budget proposal for fiscal year 2024 in February. The budget calls for keeping the real estate tax rate at $1.11 per $100 of assessed value. However, homeowners could still see tax bills rise as assessment values increased by an average 6.97 percent. Residential assessment values increased by an average 6.81 percent in the Hunter Mill District, which covers Reston, Vienna, and parts of Tysons and Herndon.

For Fairfax County Public Schools, Hill proposed an $144.1 million increase to the county transfer to the school district. That was 7 percent less than the $159 million requested by Superintendent Michelle Reid.

On March 7, the Board of Supervisors set the advertised tax rate at the current $1.11 per $100 of assessed value, the highest real estate tax rate it will consider. Public hearings on the budget will be held April 11 to 13. Budget markup is scheduled for May 2, and a final decision on the tax rate and budget will be on May 9. The final FCPS budget will be adopted by the School Board on May 25.
