Fairfax County Schools Make Weather Decision For Dec. 15

Fairfax County Public Schools is changing its schedule Thursday as inclement weather is expected in the region.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday due to inclement weather starting overnight.

Morning preschool special education classes are canceled, and afternoon classes will start on a normal schedule. Full-day preschool special education, Family and Early Childhood Education Program/Head Start classes, and Adult High School and GED courses will start on a two-hour delay. Morning field trips and morning transportation for high school academy are canceled. Adult and Community Education classes will start on time.

School age child care centers will open at 8 a.m. Central offices will open to the public at 10 a.m. FCPS central office employees should report no later than 10 a.m.

Superintendent Michelle Reid urged caution with travel, particularly for young drivers.

"With freezing rain in the forecast, it is important for us all to be prepared, especially our youngest drivers who may not have experienced dangerous road conditions," Reid wrote to families. "Please consider encouraging student drivers to take school transportation if at all possible."

FCPS will continue to monitor weather conditions into Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Northern Virginia region. The advisory begins at 1 a.m. Thursday and will continue until 1 p.m. in Fairfax County. Freezing rain is expected with accumulation between a glaze and one-tenth of an inch. Forecasters believe the Thursday morning commute will have hazardous conditions.
