Fire Starts On Deck Of Vienna Home

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue says improperly discarded smoking materials caused seven fires in 2019.

VIENNA, VA—Firefighters responded to a fire on the deck of a Vienna home early Tuesday. No one was injured, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue says.

Around 12:02 a.m., units were called to the 2200 block of Chestertown Drive. Firefighters quickly put out the fire in the rear of the two-story home, which was starting to extend into the attic.

Five people were home and evacuated when the fire broke out. One of the residents found the fire and called 911. Smoke alarms were working properly.

Fire investigators say the fire started on the rear deck due to improperly discarded smoking materials. This was the seventh fire caused by improperly discarded smoking materials in Fairfax County this year.

Four people were displaced and have declined Red Cross assistance. The fire department estimates damages to be $80,000.
