This article appears here each spring as you gardeners do your planting. Thanks for past years' donations of so much healthy produce.
Here’s is a great suggestion I received from attending a service day at a local church: plant a row in your backyard garden this year for Food for Others.
More than 23 million Americans live in a “food desert,” far from fresh meat, fruits, or vegetables. The result is that these people, mostly poor, eat cheap junk foods, readily available everywhere, that ironically create obesity in poorly-fed people.
It is extraordinary how much good food can come from backyard gardens. So I pass this suggestion on to our Vienna Patch readers. Plant a row for FFO! If you would set aside part of your garden to grow vegetables for Food for Others, many needy families in our area would benefit. If your specialty is tomatoes or zucchini or green beans, a basket of your bounty will go a long way for our clients. They are so thrilled to get fresh produce from us. So, with apologies to Peter, Paul, and Mary: “Inch by inch, row by row, Gonna make this garden grow – and gonna plan a row for FFO.”
After your harvest, you can bring your produce to us at 2938 Prosperity Avenue in Fairfax, just across from the Merrifield Post Office truck entrance. Food for Others has ample refrigerator space to ensure that your donation stays fresh and a constant stream of families coming to us to ensure that your donation will be put to good use the next day.

Food for Others’ Mission is to obtain and distribute free food to the hungry of Northern Virginia and to support food programs of other community-based organizations. We provide a channel for people to volunteer their services to help their neighbors in need.
