Fourth Of July Fireworks Proposal At Madison Turned Down
The school district rejected Vienna's proposal to hold Fourth of July fireworks at Madison High School.

VIENNA, VA—The Town of Vienna's proposal to hold Fourth of July fireworks at Madison High School has been rejected.
Fairfax County Public Schools officials notified Vienna Parks and Recreation's department in a memo this week, Insidenova reports. The memo expressed concerns about damage to Madison's new synthetic turf fields and the covering on the roof, which would lose its warranties if damaged in the display. Principal Gregory Hood cited the food trucks, pre-show performances and food items on the field as concerns.
Town officials wanted to move the display to the school, improving public viewing and adding more room for food trucks. The fireworks have been launched from Southside Park in recent years, which has limited parking nearby and is low lying, limiting visibility of the show. FCPS has allowed the City of Fairfax and McLean Community Center to host fireworks displays at public schools.

The Fairfax County Fire Marshal’s Office had approved the use of 3-inch shells, and the nearby Louise Archer Elementary School would have served as a fallout zone for the fireworks. Risk officials told the town it would need $10 million of insurance to protect FCPS interests.
